Rhine transport: surcharges from 20 August
Low water levels on the Rhine are restricting inland waterway transport and, from 20 August, increasing the cost of some container pre-carriage operations in Germany and Alsace. At the same time, carriers need to prepare quotations for road toll changes in the Netherlands and Romania, while partners exposed to Felixstowe should urgently check their settlements with MGFL Haulage.
- 2,00 EUR/km PL→DE spot rate
- 44 EUR/container Rhine road surcharge
- 2 266,00 EUR/1000L Diesel price in Germany
- 22,3% Dutch road toll reduction
What it means for the forwarder
Thursday 20.08.2026 · 4 · decisions for todayAt a PL→DE spot rate of 2,00 EUR/km, Rhine pre-carriage costs should immediately be recalculated to include 44 EUR/container or 50 EUR/container, with trucks or rail capacity secured in advance.
Dutch quotations from 1 September onwards must account for the temporary 22,3% road toll reduction instead of retaining cost assumptions from the earlier period.
Before preparing October quotations, confirm that subcontractors are ready for TollRo and specify which party will cover the Romanian road toll.
Counterparties with unsettled exposure to MGFL should reconcile their accounts today and submit a proof of debt if they are entitled to do so.
